Squad Comparison

Japan

Previously, the Japanese have been enormously successful in this competition, winning it 11 times, more than any other nation. While they fell short of reaching the quarter-finals in Qatar last winter, there were plenty of encouraging signs for this program in the future.

As they came back to defeat former world champions Germany and Spain (2-1), topping their group for the first time in over 20 years. Their performance in Qatar persuaded the federation to keep Hajime Moriyasu as manager, despite speculation that they might look for a new manager after the World Cup, with Marcelo Bielsa among those mentioned. Tuesday will be their first match on Japanese soil since defeating South Korea 3-0 in the final of the EEAFF E-1 Football Championship, where they posted three consecutive clean sheets.

Japan Playing XI

Schmidt; Sugawara, Itakura, Machida, H. Ito; J. Ito, Endo, Morita, Kamada; Asano, Nishimura

Colombia

With Lorenzo previously serving as an assistant to Jose Pekerman with the Colombians from 2012 to 2019, having a familiar face on the sidelines appears to have brought a team coming off a failed World Cup qualification campaign back together.

Lorenzo might not be the most experienced manager, having only worked as a head coach at Melgar in Peru, but his appointment has paid off so far. They haven\’t lost outside of Colombia in over a year, falling 1-0 to Argentina in a February 2022 World Cup qualifier. Only three South American teams have won the Kirin Challenge Cup, and none have done so since 2011, when Peru shared the title with Japan and the Czech Republic.

Colombia Playing XI

Vasquez; Palacios, Cuesta, Lucumi, Mojica; Uribe, Velasquez; Arias, Rodriguez, Carrascal; Falcao

Match Prediction for Japan vs Colombia

Takuma Nishimura did score 15 minutes from time in Japan\’s previous match against Uruguay, his third goal in only four international appearances, while Takuma Asano has eight goals for the Samurai Blue, the most recent being the game-winning goal against Germany at the World Cup last winter. Both teams are already in good form, with creative players and plenty of quality, so we expect chances at both ends in what guarantees to be a close game, and given each team\’s fighting spirit, we\’ll call this one an even draw.

Japan 1-0 Colombia, predicted by us.
